Getting the Right Size
A hat only feels right when it's sized right. Here's how to measure at home — and how we dial in your exact fit.
How to Measure
- Wrap a soft tape measure around your head where the hat will sit — about ⅛" above the ears and mid-forehead.
- Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Note the measurement in inches.
- Match your inches to the chart for your hat size. Between sizes? Size up — we fit it down precisely.
- Note your head shape (below) — it matters as much as the number.

The X-Factor
You'll see hats rated by an "X" — 2X, 5X, 7X, 10X. That number is a measure of the felt quality: generally the amount and fineness of the fur used, and how tightly and smoothly it's finished. The higher the X, the finer and denser the felt — which means it holds its shape better, sheds weather better, and lasts far longer.
Entry
Wool or lower fur content. A fine starter hat, but softer and shorter-lived.
Good Fur Felt
Real fur felt with a nicer hand and better shape retention. A solid everyday hat.
Premium
Plush, refined fur felt that holds a crisp shape, sheds weather, and ages beautifully. Buy once, wear for years.
Luxury
The finest felts — exceptional, and priced to match. A true heirloom piece.
A note of honesty: X ratings aren't perfectly standardized between makers — an "X" from one brand isn't identical to another's. But within a quality line, a higher X truly means a better felt. We build on premium fur felt so you're getting the real thing.
Felt & Straw in Texas
When to Wear What
Down here in Texas, straw does a lot of heavy lifting — it's breathable and built for the heat, so it's your go-to through the long warm season. Felt comes out when the weather finally turns and there's a chill in the air.
The old rule of thumb is felt for the cold months and straw once the heat sets in — but honestly, wear what serves you and the day you're in. A quality felt is worth having ready when the season turns.
Caring for Your Felt
When you pull last season's felt out of the closet, it can feel a touch tight. Usually that's the leather sweatband — worn all season, it never fully dries, and like any leather it draws up a little as it dries out.
The good news: a sweatband can almost always be steamed and stretched back — best done by a pro so the leather doesn't crack. Bring it by and we'll set it right.
